The Heart Behind The Mission

Our organization is a living tribute to Mary Rapelje, a remarkable woman who dedicated her life to helping others. Mary was a wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and grandmother. She spent her life selflessly supporting those around her—whether through hosting family and friends, teaching her daughters the importance of giving back, or simply offering a compassionate ear and wise advice. Mary’s legacy of kindness, generosity, and love is the foundation of Build a Team of Hope.

When Mary was going through cancer treatments herself, she often expressed how incredibly grateful she was for the support she had—from loved ones, and the ability to afford the care she needed. She recognized how fortunate she was and never took it for granted. Her heart ached for those who didn’t have the same resources, especially the children she saw bravely battling cancer in their small, fragile bodies. Their courage stayed with her.

In October 2020, Mary attended the very first Golf Outing organized by her daughters and sons-in-law. The event was held not just to raise funds, but to show Mary the beginnings of what would become her legacy. Being there, surrounded by her family and community, meant the world to her.

Mary passed away in November 2020, but her spirit and mission live on through this foundation. In her honor, we are determined to continue her work by making a positive impact in the lives of those affected by cancer—easing their burdens during a time that can feel overwhelming and hopeless.

Through Build a Team of Hope, we carry forward Mary’s compassion, and we’re committed to standing beside those in need, just as she always did.

In her honor, we are determined to continue her work by making a positive impact in the lives of those affected by cancer, easing their burdens during a time that can often feel overwhelming and hopeless.

Beautiful You Program Overview

The Beautiful You program offers unique and much-needed services to cancer patients, providing them with wigs, head coverings (including styling and care) and other salon and spa services to help them maintain their confidence, sense of self, and feel better during their treatment journey. This boutique will be located in the Appearance Center at the Bronson Kalamazoo Cancer Center and will provide a range of services from wig fittings to head covering styling to nail services and complimentary chemo bags for those undergoing treatment.

By offering these services, Beautiful You helps patients maintain their dignity and self-esteem during a difficult time. Many cancer patients feel a painful sense of loss as they see changes in their physical appearance due to treatment, and this program provides a vital opportunity to nurture their mental and emotional well-being. Also, nail care and skin care needs may change significantly during treatment due to concerns around infection. These essential services help cancer patients feel empowered and cared for and we’re excited to bring this program to our community!

Bronson Health Foundation is grateful for the gift pledge from Build a Team of Hope that covers the startup and operational costs for running the boutique for one full year. This includes offering complimentary services one day a week for patients (6-8 visits each, annually) and one complimentary wig, head covering, and a Vera Bradley tote filled with special items that come in handy for chemotherapy appointments. These items support cancer patients by providing them with an essential service that restores their sense of self during a challenging time.
